I didn’t realize until I started digging how many wonderful pet names you can find even if you base your search solely on the fact that the cat you’re trying to name is gray.
It’s honestly taken me effort to reel myself in and quit listing more and more options on this page so as not to overwhelm you with too many.

Hopefully, the fact that I’ve split names up into different sections will help make browsing easy.
First section up: the unique names for grey cats section, where I’ve listed a few of my favourite translations of the words “grey” and “silver” into other languages.
I think you’d be hard pressed to find many cats with names like these around, and I’ve added links to exactly where you can find more translations of these words in case digging for a better name using this idea is up your alley.
Next cat-egory: the fitting section. Here I’ve split names into the sub-categories – gender neutral, male, female, striped/tabby, and grey and white cats.
If there are any other sub-categories you want added to this section, do let me know! Would happily add more to the list if you’d find it helpful.
Finally, we have the funny grey cat names, under which I’ve included: ironic cat names, names after famous gray felines, names after grey cartoon characters, and popular fictional characters with the word “grey” in their names.
Would love to know which names you like best – and if there are any more gray cat names you think belong on this list.
Who knows, your idea might even end up the helpful suggestion that named someone else’s new kitten!
(Psst – looking to name something else, besides a new cat? Check out my blog Name Noodle!).

Now it’s your turn! Which are your favourite grey cat names? Are there any you love that I missed putting up here?
Have you ever named a grey cat before? If yes, what name did you end up choosing?
My striped grey and white tabby cat – the one in all the pictures above – I named Avery, after the Jackson Avery character from Grey’s Anatomy.
Why? They’ve both got piercingly gorgeous green eyes!

In 2020 a pregnant 7mo dark grey DSH was dumped at the farm where I keep my horse (who, as an ex-racehorse has a very interesting name as well: “Whatifiwaswilling” by Wilburn o/o Shu Ling by Johannesburg). After an exhaustive search to find her people (she was wearing a very expensive collar), I gave up and finally took her home. That night she graced me with a grey boi, a torti, and a grey gurl. I relinquished them to the shelter where I volunteer and agreed to foster them.🤦🏼♀️ I did their transport for vaccines, spay/neuter, microchip, and vet for oogy-eyes and diarrhea. At nine weeks I adopted all four to bring my Herd to 14(!). Now, none of my kittehs have “normal” names but I don’t fret to come up with them…they just wander into my mind. The beautiful MommaKet I named Dazzling Sparkles. She is dark grey with ghost tabby stripes in certain light, and has startling amber eyes. The first born, the DLH boi with amber eyes, I named Lunar Rock aka Rocky (which I noticed on your list)—he could pass for a squirrel with his floofy tail. He has a white undercoat; if I “part” his hair he has a white stripe and carries his white under-sided tail curled over his back—he could be a grey skunk LoL. The second born is a DSH tortoiseshell with amber eyes, her name is Glittering Stardust aka Stardust. The tiny runt grey DMH gurl is my Tiny Tot and her name is Halley’s Comet aka Halley. She has easier to see ghost tabby stripes. The kittens-not-kittens (they are 2.5yo) are collectively known as The Three Terrors.

What a typo catch! Fixed & thank you.

That is quite a list. My mom had a grey cat she named Sheba like the one from the Sheba cat food.
Elise Xavier says
Yeah, I think it’s obvious I had a hard time reeling myself in, haha.
Sheba is a *gorgeous* name. Makes sense since those stunning grey cats are always in their adverts. Wonder if it’s the same one every time?
Tracy says
I named my striped cat Sheba also, but from the 38 Special song called Little Sheba about a wrestler because my Sheba had extra toes which made it look like she was boxing.
Crystal and Daisy Mae says
My last cat was a grey/dark grey striped Tabby Cat. We called her Tigger. My current cat Daisy Mae who when she was a kitten grey then as she got older she turned a darker grey with some white on her. She is a Tuxedo cat I think. My favorite name. Hard to say.
Elise Xavier says
Wow that’s so interesting that her colour changed! Didn’t know that happened. I do love Daisy Mae. I think it’s a really unique name for a cat. Don’t often get such pretty double barrel names!
Lisa A Maynard says
We have a kitty named Daisy Mae 💕 aaaand… Dora, Teddy, Wilbur, Mooshie, Sky, Nallah, Violet, Willow, Carbon, Wilbur, Seven, and Roo. Our beloved (and very first fur baby) Molly just crossed the 🌈 bridge 2 weeks ago (RIL sweet girl) and we just rescues a gorgeous gray kitten who was out in the cold with the colony we care for. Just could NOT leave her outside barely a month old when the nights are already getting down in the 20’s (f) Hence why I’m here and even with all these names I still can’t find that perfect one 😞 Her name will come, just as all the rest have tho!! Just might take some time 😻
Tracy says
Wasn’t Daisy Mae from an old tv show?
Mary McNeil says
My Russian-blue-looking boy is named Alexander (the Gray.)

Such a cute pun! 🙂 Love it!

I have two gray cats – males named Zane Gray (after the author) and Grayson. I came here for suggestions for my new one – he’s solid dark gray. I’m going to call him Ashton. Thank you! 🙂
caren gittleman says
Hey!! Cody is gray! You need HIM on here! I also like to call him the “fat gray bastard” MOL MOL MOL!
Elise Xavier says
Oh yes he is!! Too funny about the nickname! I call Avery so many nicknames I should probably try to do up a list of all those.
I don’t know if I ever told you: I just love the fact that your and Cody’s names start with the same letter. I always thought that was beautiful – what an epic duo you two make 😉
Eastside Cats says
We adopted a beautiful longish haired grey cat, who’d had a rough start in life having suffered a prolapsed uterus after giving birth. She loved humans, but after months of trying, she was unable to share space with our resident cats Angel and Chuck, and we returned her to the rescue group with heavy, heavy hearts. Hurts to even type about it years later. However, finding her name was difficult. We tried baby name books, then would simply call her any name that came to mind, and she ignored ALL of them…even the name that the rescue had given her. Finally, I called out ‘Loretta’, and she turned her head and came toward me. Well, that was that. I was told that she was adopted by a couple who wanted an only cat, which makes me feel a micron better.
Elise Xavier says
That is a beautiful name she chose for herself. So strange how cats will sometimes take to many names and sometimes won’t take to any! Ever so glad she went to a couple wanting a single cat. I think if she couldn’t get along with Angel and Chuck, there’s probably no hope she’d like any cats, cause those two = absolute sweeties.
I’m sure it hurt very much to take her back, but in the end it sounds to me like that was definitely what was best for her.
