Now, there’s absolutely no way I could write an inclusive list of all the things I absolutely adore about my cat, Avery. I don’t think any one of us could come up with a complete list like this about our pets; there will always be so much we’ve forgotten or left out. But regardless of the fact that we’ll never be able to list all the things we love about them, I think it’s nice to try to put together a list like this every so often anyway, as they’re the kinds of quirks it’s lovely to look back on one day in the future when they maybe don’t do those same quirky things any longer.
Avery, for example, had a habit back in Canada of hopping to the window sill to “inspect” the outside world before bed time, all the while beating out a rhythm with his tail for 10-15 minutes before he followed me into bed to sleep. He no longer does this, maybe because the windows here make it hard for him to, maybe because he doesn’t find our current view as interesting, who knows. Either way, it’s nice for me to think back on that little quirk of his because it makes me smile, as I always loved it when he did it in the past.
Same with these face plants –

They still happen every so often, but they’re definitely more rare than before. 100% one of my favourite things that Avery does!
We’ve had a cozy kind of week in our home considering Thomas has been recovering from a pretty rough cold. A lazy week you could call it, but I definitely feel those chill days are the ones you feel most connected to those around you, especially when it comes to pets.
So it’s put me in a bit of a sentimental mood I guess. Sparking this post. Enough of a preamble, though, let’s get into a few of my favourite things about my cat, Avery.
[ Once you’re done reading, I’d love for you to write a comment down below letting me know about a few of your favourite things about your pets. If you have a pet blog yourself (I know a number of my readers don’t have one, but many of you do!) and you’d like to write a post about this yourself since the comments section is a bit limiting, please do and leave me a comment below linking to your post so I can take a look! I’m so in the mood to read through sentimental/super sappy posts like that! ๐ ]
A Few of My Favourite Things About My Cat Avery
- Avery’s resting face is a pretty grumpy/sad looking face.
But by god do I love it. He has such a frowny demeanour pretty much all the time that I feel my inner grumpy old woman is satisfied to always be looking at his grumpy lil’ face. I feel like I’ve always had resting sad face myself (and I’m not alone, even Kit Harington from Game of Thrones admits he has one!), so it’s comforting to be around a pet that essentially has a resting sad face, too! - Avery loves hugs. And I love giving them to him.
Very specific kinds of hugs but he absolutely adores it when I essentially throw him over my shoulder, like he’s a baby I’m burping, and pat him on the back while walking around and pacing with him through the house. I started off doing this whenever I came in from a “long” day out (anything more than 5 hours away from him is long to me!), and he always seemed to appreciate it. Now I do it even when I’ve been home all day and just want some extra cuddles myself, and he quite honestly digs it as much as I do. - Avery is so patient he will put up with pretty much anything.
Thomas will at times push him over on his side and rest his head on his belly, he’ll stuff him under his shirt and do plenty of other “weird” things to him, and Avery will literally not care one single bit. He just puts up with the madness, with his signature slightly grumpy, almost pouty (if cats could pout!) sad face, and yet not even make an effort to move. He’ll simply put up with any crazy thrown his way and wait the madness out. - When Thomas and I sit together to have conversations, Avery will come sit with us.
The way he does this makes it feel almost like he’s a part of the conversation himself. He won’t often sit on my lap during situations like these (something he’s usually game to do). Instead, he’ll sit on a chair or on the bed, something around the same level we’re sitting at, and watch us converse, staring at the person who’s talking with “understanding” eyes. It’s too cute for words how human he can be sometimes. - Avery will often slow blink at us when we’re talking to him.
Another adorable thing he does is give us knowing slow blinks when we’re talking to him at times. It’s likely to let us know he’s aware we’re talking to him and yet it almost feels like he’s giving us nods to signify he understands what we’re talking about. It’s especially ridiculous when Thomas starts jokingly saying something like, “We’ll just chop you up and put you in the oven, and have a bite of your leg!” and Avery “knowingly” looks at Thomas and slow blinks as if he’s an old man patiently waiting for our shenanigans and nonsense to be over. - Avery will follow me into bed to sit by me no matter what.
Whether I get into bed to work on my laptop, watch a movie with Thomas, read, take a nap, sleep for the night – Avery’s going to follow me in. Then if I get up to leave, to go to the bathroom, grab a sip of water, or whatever else, he’ll usually leap off the bed with me. Once I get back into bed to continue doing what I was doing, he hops into bed a few moment’s later usually, too. I sometimes call him to get him to come join me sooner, but given enough time, he almost without fail hops in to give me company of his own accord. And I honestly couldn’t possibly ask for better company. - Avery now jumps into my lap to sit in it when I’m at my desktop computer.
He used to whine for me to pick him up and place him in my lap, but now if I call him and pat on my lap he’ll actually hop into it to snuggle and nap. Makes me so happy that he does this! Yes, around an hour in my legs will go numb, but I’ll fidget a little and work through the tingling, because he is ever so happy when he’s sitting in my lap or taking a nap on me, and I’m happy to see him so happy. - At night when we humans are in bed, getting ready to fall asleep, Avery will stand next to us and purr, waiting until we pet him.
Since Thomas and I go to sleep at separate times, when Avery started doing this, Thomas didn’t really understand why. He said Avery would just stand next to him and purr while staring at him and he didn’t know what he wanted. I said he was just asking for cuddles before bed. And so Thomas and I both now pet him a little before heading off to bed. Can’t refuse the master ๐

Some of Your Favourite Things About Your Pets?
I know if I spent another 15 minutes brainstorming, I could easily double this list, but right now, off the top of my head, these are some of my favourite things about Avery.
Does your pet do any of the same things? What are currently some of your favourite things about your pet(s)?
Let me know in the comments section down below, and as I said, if you have a pet blog and would like to do a post on this yourself, please please do link me to your post in the comments so that I can take a peek at your article! I’d love to read some mushy posts right now ๐
Will be editing this post to include some of my favourite pet blogger posts on this topic if I get anyone writing their version! ๐
Lovely things!
Athena does quite a lot of those too. I love it when she slow blinks me and she loves hugs.
Favourite things we do together – everything really, but the best is when we go to sleep together and she rests against my leg all night. Purrfect!
Purrs xx
Athena and Marie
The slow blinks slay me every time ๐
And definitely can’t sleep without a cat doing that nowadays! It’s just impossible! ๐
xo
I LOVE these! Cody also does 1,2 and 3 (he has a permanently “Grumpy” face (only he isn’t worth millions lol, well, to ME he is)…….he loves hugs, he is EXTREMELY patient and adaptable (unless he is waiting for food). I love that throughout the day he will “show his trust” which is really him showing us his belly (and wanting us to rub it), we call it “showing his trust”……and….if I am not sharing my chicken fast enough with him, he will reach out and tap my arm as a “friendly” reminder to speed it up!
Cody sounds so much like Avery in terms of personality type. I bet if they got together they’d just stare at each other haha. Avery does that with his belly too! But he doesn’t do the tapping arm thing. I’ve seen some cats do that on YouTube videos and always thought it was the absolute cutest thing in the world! Wonder if there’s a way I could train Avery to do it ๐
Some of my cats favorite things are sleeping in front of my bedroom door at night, she likes to sleep outside my parents door in front of the Bathroom door. She has a big Teddy Bear she likes to sleep beside too. Like you, if you gave me more time I know I can come up with more. Have a good weekend.
Aw, like a little guard-cat ๐
I *need* to see some pictures of her sleeping with her teddy bear! Going to check your site to see if I can find one now! That is sooo cute!
Scooby the cat wants me to stand by him while he eats. If I walk away, he follows me and meows until I follow him back to the food bowl, where he continues to eat. Of course if I am not available, he will eat anyway on his own.
This is unreal levels of cute! I’ve never heard of a cat doing this before!
Avery sounds like he’s a very happy cat. I love that he does face plants (me too) and joins conversations (me too) and going to bed with you. That’s what my sister Gidget does. There are a lot us at my house, but I’m the favorite. I tell that to everyone. I love to travel with my parents. Mostly car rides (and I love big Mac trucks, especially at night with the lights on). I even flew in a plane to Vegas with them and walked the red carpet! I’m pretty amazing. Ask anybody. Nice to meet you and Avery. I look forward to hanging out with you from now on.
Aw I’d love for Avery to travel with me in the car. Good for you for being such a fabulous cat ;). Sounds like you’d be the star of the show anywhere!
That’s a nice bunch of things for sure and each and every once of us has unique qualities…or quirks!
Definitely ๐
